The Shonan-Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival!

Tanabata is celebrated on July 7th (August 7th in some places) throughout Japan.  Tanabata celebrates a story adopted from China about 2,000 years ago, "The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd".  According to the story, Orihime (the star, Vega), the daughter of the Heaven God, would weave beautiful cloths for her father.  Afraid she was working too hard, Orihime's father decided to introduce her to Hikoboshi (the star, Altair), who was a cow herder.  They fell in love immediately.  They were so infatuated with each other that they forgot their duties.  Cows ran off or became sick, and there was no more beautiful woven cloths.  This angered the Heaven God, who decided to separate the two with the great river in Heaven, the Milky Way.  Desperately sad, Orihime cried uncontrollably.  The Heaven god decided he would give her some peace and allowed the two lovers to meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month, but only if there was no rain.  Because, if there was rain, the Milky Way would flood and the two could not cross it to see each other.

This year Hiratsuka is celebrating Tanabata between July 4th and July 6th.  So, the hubs, kids and I packed bags and trekked out in this dreary weather to check out the festivities.   We hit the road at 0930, after a quick return to the apartment to get the forgotten sunglasses.  We decided to drive to the main gate and park then walk to Yokosuka Station.  The sky threatened to rain on us all day, luckily, it held its moisture all day.  We made the 1010 train, through Zushi and Ofuna, and arrived at Hiratsuka Station at 1102, around 580 Yen.  We walked out of the North Entrance, walked one block and then took a left down Beniya-Pearl Road.

According to the pamphlet we got at Machikado Square, this is the 64th Tanabata Festival for this city, where almost 2 million people will walk the streets during the three day celebration to look at over 50,000 decorations.  The decorations were all very colorful and covered everything from Disney characters to soccer stars to anime characters.  There were food vendors on both sides of the streets from one end of the festival to the other.

We walked the full length of Beniya-Pearl Road, then took a right and walked two blocks to the Shonan Star Mall street.  The Shonan Star Mall street is the main road for decorations.

Apparently, people and businesses create the beautiful decorations around the town and then people can vote on their favorite.  I'm not sure if the winner actually gets something or not.

The picture on the left is of what I think is a bird.  It is tied to one of the poles in the picture above. It looks like it is made of a milk carton.  There is one in the group that is made with those popcorn holders you get at the movies.

So, after walking for about forty five minutes, we stopped and bought the kids slushies.  Both strawberry, because that's the only flavor we could understand when it was said.  :)

Above is a shot down the main street.  The decorations are tied to bamboo poles that are then tied to rails, poles, and buildings along the street.  We were lucky to have a slightly windy day, not only to help alleviate the heavy humidity, but also to make the streamers swoosh magically as we walked underneath.

We love Hiratsuka!
There was all kinds of food for sale.  Tons of meats on sticks, bananas on sticks, pineapple on sticks, zucchini on sticks...whatever you can think of....on a stick.

What would a Japanese festival be without characters running around and taking pictures with screaming kids?  There were also many, many people, especially cute little girls, dressed in yukata.

Out of all the food offered, we decided on fried spaghetti sticks.  They were good, but not as good as the sticks we can get at a restaurant in Yokosuka.  Note:  we brought lunch with us, turkey and cheese sammies, because we are going out tonight to celebrate our anniversary.

We made it back to Hiratsuka Station and caught the 1250 train, back through Ofuna and Zushi, to Yokosuka.  On our walk home we took a stroll through Verny Park to check out the pretty roses.  We made it home around 1430...and, we didn't get rained on!

This was not one of the more exciting excursions we've made over the last year and a half, but it was neat to look at all the streamers, and to just get off base for a bit this weekend.

Map:  Our route:  from North Exit of Hiratsuka Stn to Beniya-Pearl Road, where we took a left.  Walked to Machikado Square so the kids could sit and eat/drink slushies, then back to Beniya-Pearl Road all the way to the main road (the bold road running up and down-farthest to the left).  We then walked to Shonan Star Mall road and walked all the way to the MN Building, where we made a right and headed back to the station.

Yokosuka Summer Camp - Continued

 Week Two

Practicing running bases
This was Mackenzie's second week of summer camp.  Sport on deck:  Softball!!  I was afraid that the longer into summer we went, the hotter and more miserable the two hours of sports would be for us.  But, this week turned out to be quite a nice week.  It was partly sunny all week, except Thursday was mostly cloudy, and I think we had a slight breeze all week, which made it much easier to be out there.

We saw this Marine and about
20 of his closest friends
walking down our street
when we were leaving
Monday morning.
Playing with Play-Do while watching Sis
Anywho....Mackenzie was quite excited to find out she would have all the same coaches for softball that she did in soccer.  We arrived a few minutes before 9 Monday and the coaches unlocked the gate to let everyone onto the field.  (The coaches didn't seem to be as excited to be there before camp started as they were the very first week of camps, two weeks ago.  Maybe it was the heat...maybe it was because they were just as uneasy about coaching some of the wild kids they'd seen over and over, and had to chase all over the field over and over, maybe it was the tantrums they could expect...aahh...kids!).

So, after a 25 minute warm up the huge group of 40 kids broke up into five smaller groups and then headed off to their designated stations.  Mackenzie's first station was running the bases.  They learned to run through first base and that they had to stay on the base at second.  They ran around those bases for thirty minutes!  They really seemed to love playing cat and mouse....a group of four kids (mice) would start at home and run the bases.  When they got halfway between home and first the cat would start running and the cat would try to tag all the mice before they got to home plate.

Burying Iron Man and Spiderman in the volleyball sand
The second station was catching a ball and throwing it back.  The coach would roll the ball to the kids and they tossed it back.  Mackenzie kept throwing underhanded, so that night we worked on an overhand throw.  The final station was hitting a ball on a T.  I took a few pictures here and then Garytt was begging me to take a walk.  I think the last forty-five minutes or so of this day they spent playing games.

We were lucky enough to get an awesome view of a USAF helicopter flying over the field to land over by Daddy's work.  Garytt said this was the coolest moment of the day.

After practice we ran down to our park and had a good game of ball in the yard.  We all ended up with a million bug bites, but had a LOT of fun!

Day three...Daddy was able to take a little time off work and watch.  She was so excited!  He got to watch her play a little game for about thirty minutes.

While she played Tuesday and Wednesday, Garytt put in a lot of scooter practice.  He's getting pretty fast on that thing now....needs to get better at using the brake (and might need new shoes with more rubber on the toe and heel now).

Our final day was moved out to Briggs Bay ball fields because another group had reserved the other ball field a few weeks ago.  Since I knew Garytt and I might have this huge field to ourselves, I packed up or sports bag with stuff for Garytt and I to do while Mackenzie played.  First, we hit balls off the T.  Then we practiced throwing the baseball.  Then, we practiced throwing a football.  I kicked the ball way up into the air for Garytt to chase down.  We played soccer.  We practiced kicking goals.  Just a fun time for just the two of us!  :)

That took about an hour and then he was ready to take a walk.  Where we met some spectators to the softball training....eek!  about 11 seahawks hanging out on the fence.  At the end of our walk, Garytt found his friend Aiya.  They ran around in the weeds with a net and butterfly box. They caught two butterflies.
This was another successful week of sports for Miss Mackenzie!  Her coaches were awesome again! I give them five stars for being able to put up with all of the chaos that goes along with 5-8 year old kids.

Next week....Art camp.  That will be our last week of camp until VBS in August.

Happy Anniversary, My Love!

We have had a pretty amazing ride over the years.  We have had many adventures (some more successful than others), we have visited many states, many monuments, many caves, mountains, lakes, rivers, and even a few countries as well.  We have experienced tornadoes, hurricanes, rainbows and sunshine.  We have celebrated anniversaries together, we have celebrated anniversaries hundreds of miles apart.  We have moved four times.  We have had many laughs, we have shed tears together.  We have three amazing children!  We have experienced many 'firsts' together and I look forward to many more in our future.

Honeymoon  1999
We spent our honeymoon in Williamsburg.  Our first night in the city we ended up with food poisoning and then spent almost the whole week incredibly, painfully, pitifully sick.  Finally, the day before we had to leave we ventured out of the suite.  We made it to Busch Gardens.  Then, on our first roller coaster for the day...the thing got stuck at the top of the first hill.  We sat there for a while before they fixed the problem.  What a start to the marriage....in sickness and in health....
